The real steam-engines

And again a summer vacation in Fiss.
As always we enjoyed our stay in "Haus Sunnbichl".
The weather was very good. It was mostly dry. An ocassional shower in the evening or night.
The first week the temperature was around 20 degrees Celsius in the first week to above 25 degrees in the second week.
I think we were very lucky, it was one of the most beautiful periods this summer in Austria.

Pictures 1, 2 and 3

The Kaunertaler Gletscherstrasse is one of the most beautiful roads in Austria.
The road goes from Prutz (at 866 metre) in the upper Inn valley to the glacier at the end of the valley (2750 metre).
The valley is very narrow with high mountains (over 3000 metres) on both sides and has a breathtaking landscape. The first hairpins brings you to a large reservoir for hydropower (about 6 km long) at 1765 metre, the Gepatschspeicher. After that you climb with a lot of hairpins to the parking place near the Gletscher at 2750 metre.

A look into the valley with the Faggenbach where the road crosses the river.

In de second picture you the the beautiful landscape with the glacier at tje and of the valley

The third picture shows the reservoir.

Sunrise. As last year, you could watch the sun rise from the top of the Schönjöchl. You have to get up early, at 04:00 hours in the morning. At 05:00 the cableway brings you to the the restaurant on the mountain. After a short walk we arrived at about 06:00 hours at the summit of the Schönjöchl (2.500 metres).
While we waited for the sun to rise, we were entertained by the local band.
This year was so much better as the last year, the clouds stayed at about 2.000 metres, so we had fantastic weather.
Around 6:35 we could see the sun rise behind the mountains, at 06:38 the sun was above the mountains. From the first visible part till the complete sunrise it was about one minute.
This was an amazing and beautiful experience.
After the sunrise we went back to the restaurant to enjoy our lavish breakfast.
